World Cup First Round Wrap Up; Defending Champions Italy Eliminated

With the end of today's games, the first round of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is over, and 16 countries have moved onto the second round:

Groups A, B, C, & D
(1A) Uruguay vs (2B) South Korea 6/26 at 10AM
(1C) United States vs (2D) Ghana 6/26 at 2:30PM
(1D) Germany vs (2C) England 6/27 at 10AM
(1B) Argentina vs (2A) Mexico 6/27 at 2:30PM

Groups E, F, G, & H
(1E) Netherlands vs (2F) Slovakia 6/28 at 10AM
(1G) Brazil vs (2H) Chile 6/28 at 2:30PM
(1F) Paraguay vs (2E) Japan 6/29 at 10AM
(1H) Spain vs (2G) Portugal 6/29 at 2:30PM

Overall, I pretty much couldn't be happier with how this played out. The US and England both moved on, as well as Brazil and Portugal, which are pretty much the only 4 teams I care about. However, I will say that I was incredibly surprised to see Italy lose to Slovakia to eliminate them from the World Cup all together. As defending champions, I expected more out of them. And as defending runner-ups, I expected more out of France as well. But hey, I'm not complaining.

I am excited to watch more than half of the games that are about to be played in the next four days, which is saying a lot considering my non-existing interest in soccer at the beginning of the tournament. Aside from the games my four favorites are in, I'm pretty stoked to watch the Argentina vs Mexico game, and I will definitely be cheering for the blue and white.

Eight teams make it to the quarterfinals that start on Friday, July 2 and Saturday, July 3. US, please beat Ghana so we can celebrate the 4th of July appropriately by watching you play over the weekend.
