Designer of the Week: Manolo Blahnik

I've always told people that I will know when I have finally made it: the day that I can buy a pair of Manolo Blahnik heels and not plummet into debt. I'll let you know when that day hits, but until then, I can just dream about them and give you all a little taste of the man behind the shoes.

Born and raised in the Canary Islands, Manolo Blahnik (pictured right) is a Spanish fashion designer who has an extremely long list of accomplishments. Graduating from the University of Geneva, writing for Vogue Italia, the Commander of the British Empire award for his service to fashion in 2007, many CFDA awards; the list goes on. The Design Museum in London even had an exhibit dedicated to his designs in 2003.

His shoes are sold internationally in the following locations: London, Dublin, Athens, Madrid, Istanbul, Dubai, Kuwait, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Singapore. In the US, New York and Las Vegas most famously carry them, as well department stores Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, and Saks Fifth Avenue. Manolo Blahnik's flagship store is still located in London to this day, where he first started out.

For now, these are the two pairs I'm dying to have but obviously can't rationalize as a broke, college student.

The Hangisi shoe in royal blue is almost $1,000 and the Sederaby in bronze is $715, but there is a huge sale on Manolo's on Barneys' website. They never go out of style, so your best bet is to buy them as the seasons are changing and everything goes for half-price.

"You put high heels on and you change." -Manolo Blahnik
