World Cup Quarterfinals Take Shocking Turn

Well, this weekend certainly proved that not only do I pick the wrong bandwagon teams to jump on, I seemingly do not know enough at all to make any sort of predictions about the World Cup.

In the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup on Friday July 2 and Saturday July 3, there were surprises and heartbreak in every direction. Powerhouse Brazil let go of control of the game and allowed the Netherlands team to defeat them 2-1. In a gut-wrenching shootout, Ghana lost to Uruguay 4-2 penalties after a 1-1 tie in regulation. The biggest surprise of the weekend was most likely the havoc that Germany wrecked on Argentina with a 4-0 win. The least surprising was the 1-0 Spain win over Paraguay. On top of Brazil's shocking loss to the Netherlands, their coach Dunga was fired immediately upon return to Brazil after their loss.

All in all, probably not the World Cup quarterfinals that anyone was expecting to see.

With these results, I said goodbye to my last remaining teams, and I decided I'll be cheering for Spain for the duration (mainly because most of my roommates are). That being said, Spain will probably lose with my track record at this point so I'm sorry if you're a fan and I'm jinxing you. The Uruguay vs. Netherlands game is today at 2:30pm and the Germany vs. Spain game is tomorrow at the same time.

By the way, for anyone following the other huge international sporting even going on, the Tour de France had some surprises for us this weekend as well. Lance Armstrong dropped back to 5th after falling into the massive sea of crashes in the rain-stricken second stage of the race. After Stage 3 today, Lance is now 2 minutes and 30 seconds behind the leader, ranked 18th overall. As this is his self-proclaimed "last tour", I really hope he manages to pull this out. With 20 stages, he has a long way to go and plenty of time to make up those 2 1/2 minutes. Stage 4 is tomorrow: a 153.5 km ride from Cambrai to Reims.
