Designer Bio: Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen, born Lee Alexander McQueen, is one of the most iconic fashion designers of our time. He is most well known for being the chief designer at the French Haute Couture House Givenchy (succeeding John Galliano) and for starting his own label under the name Alexander McQueen. McQueen was born in London, where he studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design. He quickly became known for his extremely lavish and unconventional runway shows. He partnered with Gucci in 2000, created two fragrances (Kingdom and My Queen), and started a line for younger men and women, McQ.

Alexander was the first designer to merge with the cosmetic industry, pairing with MAC to create the McQueen makeup line in 2007. McQueen won British Designer of the Year four times (1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003), and he also won CFDA's International Designer of the Year in 2003. Many celebrities, such as Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, and perhaps most notably, Lady Gaga, have worn his designs.

In February 2010, Alexander McQueen took his own life, right before Paris Fashion Week was to take place. His friends said that McQueen was in a hard place at the time he died, but his fashion legacy will never be forgotten.

"Clothes and jewellery should be startling, individual. When you see a woman in my clothes, you want to know more about them. To me, that is what distinguishes good designers from bad designers." -Alexander McQueen

RIP. Your presence in the fashion world is missed,
but your influence will never fade.
